It’s that time of the year when we all pause for a moment to consider our blessings. The Board of the Virginia Genealogical Society (VGS) is no different. We thank you, our members and friends, for your continued support of the organization and the genealogical community. Without you, we would not be able to:
- offer our spring and fall conferences;
- support Virginia records preservation projects; or
- be nearly as effective in our advocacy to keep important genealogical records accessible.
Without you generously donating your time working with VGS last May, the National Genealogical Society 2023 Family History Conference would not have been such a success!
Your donations to the Virginia Records Fund made it possible for VGS to present the Library of Virginia Foundation with $10,000 for the digitization of WWII Separation Notices. Your donations also allow VGS to continue our support of local Virginia societies through our matching and special grants program. On a national level, VGS contributes to the Stern-NARA Fund which preserves and digitizes valuable research materials at the National Archives.
In the coming year, VGS will make another donation to the Library of Virginia Foundation to support the creation of a biographical database for the Library of Virginia’s 3,000 legislative petitions in the 1776-1786 period. This is part of the Library’s Legislative Petitions Project for the VA 250 American Revolution Commission.
Tuesday, November 28th, is Giving Tuesday when people across the country donate to their favorite charities. We encourage you to remember VGS next Tuesday. Think about your excitement when you find an old record about your ancestor and how thankful you are that someone had the foresight to preserve it!
Please join us this Giving Tuesday and support VGS and the greater genealogical community. To learn more about VGS-supported funds, please visit https://www.vgs.org/donations/.
Thank you! We wish you a very happy Thanksgiving.
